Mary Anne Souder - 2014
Mary Anne Souder has coached volleyball for over 17 years. Her love of the game started at a young age going to the kids camp at Newark Catholic High School. She grew up in Sidney, Ohio and played for Lehman Catholic High School and then went on to play as a setter for Otterbein University.
After college she began coaching as the JV coach at Newark Catholic and then volunteered as an Assistant Varsity Coach at Dublin Coffman eventually becoming the head coach in 2006. Over the past 10 years Souder has led the ROCKS to 9 straight District titles and 3 State Final appearances.
She has been in many battles but none bigger than one in September of 2013 when her then 18 month old son Liam was diagnosed with, neuroblastoma, a rare childhood cancer. At the time Liam was diagnosed, Souder was 6 months pregnant with twin girls (Maddie and Zoe). She and her family traveled between Columbus, New York, and Houston for his treatments.
Liam's treatment included: 6 rounds of chemotherapy, a 13 hour surgery, a bone marrow transplant, radiation, and 6 rounds of anti-body therapy. He survived 4 seperate stays in intensive care for complications from treatment and their longest stretch inpatient of 98 days.
Throught his treatment the volleyball community rallied behind Souder and in the summer of 2014, 63 teams competed and raised funds for the family at the Melissa Belcher Summer Classic. The 2014 tournament took place just before Liam’s last phase of treatment and it was the boost the family needed to keep them fighting.
We are happy to say Liam has beaten the odds and is currently cancer free and the Souder family has grown again with the addition of a baby boy (Jake) in April of 2016.
